The Fay Jones School of Architecture is inaugurating a new Advanced Digital Fabrication Lab [DFAB-LAB]  supporting new research and teaching initiatives directed by 21st C. Chair in Integrated Practice, assistant professor Santiago R. Pérez. The new lab will provide specialised computer-controlled machines for both small-scale protoyping and large-scale industrial fabrication of components in steel, wood, and experimental materials for architecture. The lab has been outfitted with a custom high-gantry, 5-Axis CNC mill and Steel Plasma Cutter, an innovative tool that will provide new opportunities for research and teaching.

FABCRAFT will  inaugurate the opening of the DFAB-LAB with a series of workshops, culminating with an exhibition of work at the Bentonville sUgAR gallery.

Aether.SCS02

DESCRIPTION:
Aether.SCS02 is conceived as a cloud, capable of registering the properties of a collective audience and, through a set of layered behavioral protocols, catalyzing an atmosphere of shifting color and light. A group of three intricately crafted forms emerge from a field of charges instantiated within the gallery space. These structural skins pulse a soft white light in their dormant state and await a proximity trigger to activate illumination within each form’s unique color spectrum. Through querying the states of the adjacent forms and the movements of its audience, the piece arrives upon unpredictable atmospheric conditions by continually blending and shifting its coloration.

Auxotrophic Ecologies

Studio Mode was commissioned by Populous in New York City to design a custom parametric model and digital environment for the schematic and design development phases of a futbol stadium in Monterrey, Mexico.

The project required the ability to achieve iterative development of the stadium’s overall form, skin, and associated surface geometry, including material break-lines and “gilled” apertures. The model was generated using associative logics related to main driver geometry based in a 1:1 metric and utilized the extension of the chosen parametric design platform, Grasshopper, through custom built and scripted nodes.

polypPanels is a wall panelization system that explores the effects of dissimilar perforation and diffused coloration through aperture.

While it presents a colorfully intricate frontal pattern, the panelized system utilizes viewing vectors to offer glimpses of what is beyond.

The N_Table was designed in collaboration with Andrew Kudless (MATSYS) for a small video installation by Norah Zuniga Shaw.

The table consists of a cellular-structured base and a rear-projected screen serving as a tabletop. Audio and video equipment and contained at the bottom of the table allowing for a light to permeate throughout the cellular base.

Studio Mode and Brandon Zeeb were commissioned by performance artist Tahni Holt to consult on the design and development of a series of projected visuals for the live performance “Endless Ocean Endless Sky.”

The hour-long performance is structured around a script consisting of 100 short chapters based on Holt’s non-linear, non-narrative “blueprint.” Utilizing the processing capabilities of Max.Msp.Jitter, Studio Mode developed a library of short-sequence and procedurally-processed videos which were compiled into longer formats for the performance.
